Helen Keller International has received funding for a vision assessment program for children ages 4- 5 years old. We have developed a vision assessment and case management model to identify and treat vision needs of young children. We are currently seeking Project Assistants to assist in the launching of the ChildSight® New York Young Children Program.

Scope of the Position(s):

These positions will assist in provision of vision assessment, dispensing of eyeglasses and project documentation and communication within Pre-K programs through out the New York City communities.

To complete screening assessment with children, assist the optometrist or ophthalmologist in the implementation of vision assessment, assist in the distribution of eyeglasses as prescribed by Optometrists (OD) or Ophthalmologists (MD), and promote follow-up care through education and case management services.

Work Schedule and Compensation:

These are part-time positions (up to 30 hours per week). The positions are active only during the academic year (Sept.–June). These positions provide an hourly wage.

Responsibilities include:

  • Utilize good customer service skills in interaction with students, families and other internal and external contacts.
  • Administer vision assessment to students in accordance with ChildSight® guidelines.
  • Assist consulting OD or MD in the implementation of vision assessment.
  • Assist in the distribution of eyeglasses in collaboration with the consulting optician, OD or MD; in accordance with ChildSight® guidelines.
  • Conduct educational information sessions to children, school personnel and/or parents/guardians regarding the screening assessment, vision health, potential vision difficulties and treatments.
  • Assist in the provision of case management services to parent/guardians of children referred for follow-up care.
  • Prepare program documentation including data collection tools, notification letters, memo to teachers, surveys, inventory management tools and other assigned documents.
  • Assist in the movement and setup of inventory supplies and project equipment, weighing up to 50lbs, as necessary in the implementation of the program.
  • Promote and participate in program publicity, retention efforts and community outreach.
  • Dedicate ongoing attention to personal professional development.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Commitment to youth, health and education is a must.
  • Dynamic self-starter with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility is important in this position.
  • Bi-lingual skills (Spanish) preferred.
  • Familiarity with the New York City preferred.
